Smart Girls and Boys from Qorako’l Oasis

Qorako’l oasis, situated in 70 kilometers from Bukhoro, has been known as a land of scientists in exact sciences for centuries. The last decade was marked with achievements of students from the local specialized boarding school ¹1 for talented children who bring fame to Uzbekistan by winning first prizes in international competitions in physics and mathematics. Along with the training process, the school experiences major reforms aimed at improvement of the educational infrastructure in compliance with the National Cadres Training Program.

Grasping the heights of science

Qorako’l district manifested itself again as an enlightenment center in 1993, when the specialized boarding school ¹1 had its first graduation. 38 graduates out of 40 entered higher education institutions that year. Annually, 95-98 percent of students from each graduation become university students since that time. In the same 1993, the 11th-grade student To’lqin Boltayev became the first school student who won a high prize in the republican subject competition in mathematics.

At present Qorako’l students possess a total of 37 medals of different value, acquired in the republican subject competition among academic lyceums, professional colleges and general schools in mathematics, chemistry, physics and economy. Moreover, for the last 10 years, students of the specialized boarding school ¹1 have won 24 more medals in the World Competition in Mathematics and Jautikov’s International Competition in Mathematics and Physics in Kazakhstan. Besides, they received different personal scholarships and won prizes in republican contests for many times.

Now students are very grateful to their Qorako’l teachers for solid knowledge, good breeding, and ability of achieving their goals.

It’s just the start

All abovementioned achievements became a considerable ground for making a decision of establishing an academic lyceum in Qorako’l district last year. A new building and hostels were erected near the boarding school. Later on the new establishment was transformed into the academic lyceum ¹ 3 under the Bukhoro State University. The school was transformed into the specialized school ¹52. Thus, they established a unique training complex in Qorako’l district meeting the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On education” and National Cadres Training Program and providing excellent conditions for full-fledged discovering of talents.

Young people came to enter education institutions in Qorako’l district from all regions of the country last year. The teachers note that almost all graduates of the local specialized school have chosen the new academic lyceum this year to continue their study there. And the teaching staff is not stopped at the accomplished. This was proved by the bronze medal acquired by Azizhon Nazarov, student of the specialized school ¹ 52, in Jautikov’s International Competition in Mathematics and Physics in 2010. His schoolmates Rahmatjon Narzullaev and Feruz Sultonov as well as Otabek Asadov, first-year student of the academic lyceum ¹ 3 were awarded honorable mention diplomas. According to the data of the Center for Secondary Special and Professional Education, Qorako’l students were also included into the national team to represent the country in the World Competition in Mathematics this July. All this is just the start.

Multiplying accomplishment

“Having augmented our pedagogical experience we will be able to teach our students to achieve even higher results,” Tuhtamurod Jumaev, director of the academic lyceum ¹ 3 under Bukhoro State University, former specialized school ¹1, shared his view with UT.

What is the secret of successful training of children by pedagogical teams led by you?

“The secret is in the aspiration for exceeding the previously achieved progress both in teachers and children. They persistently wish to achieve something new that has not been achieved yet. Much depends on students. They are talented, and most importantly, they strive for profound study of the subjects they have chosen. The teacher’s proficiency is important as well. They regularly upgrade their professionalism by studying the foremost national and foreign teaching experience.”

How do you to discover talented and goal-minded children while selecting new groups?

“They come to us themselves. It so happens that every year the number of visitors exceeds the number we can admit. That is why we always conduct entrance exams. Everybody knows about the competition and high level of training to enter our lyceum. Our entrance exams resemble the intellectual competition where the strongest boys and girls compete for the right of being our students.”

I wonder what qualities a teacher should have to be able to train a winner of international competitions?

“I comprehended the answer to this question in the process of developing this education institution. Teacher is a person who is dealing with upbringing only. A tutor is a person who educates. He is worthy of the title of a mentor who educates concurrently with upbringing, he who loved students like his own children and wins their confidence. Students of such specialists achieve very high results in their life.”

What methods are used by your colleagues during their work?

“Our teachers train their students to study independently, acquire and enhance their knowledge and skills by means of creative approach to their activity. The teachers have such skills; they analyze every day and regularly work on oversights. Each of our teachers is talented in his subject. The opinion exchange with teams of the strongest education institutions, and notably with famous specialized school ¹3 of Shavat district, Khorazm region contributed much into our establishment.
